What do I need to know before I fly?
Reservations and ticketing:
Ravn Alaska offers both walk-up and advance purchase fares, which are limited and have advance reservation and purchase requirements. We offer several options for purchasing tickets: our Reservations Office can offer electronic ticketing over the phone with the use of a major credit card, or you can purchase tickets at any Ravn Alaska airport ticket counter, through your local travel agent or at www.flyravn.com. All tickets purchased for air travel are valid for one year from the original date of issue. If a ticket is rebooked or reissued, the new tickets validity continues to follow the expiration of the originally purchased ticket. (Flight coupons will be honored only in the order in which they are issued. For example, if you have a ticket purchased from Kenai to Anchorage, and continuing to Kodiak, you must fly the entire itinerary as purchased. Refunds or ticket reissues are not provided if tickets are used out of order, and any unused coupons have no value for future travel.)
Ravn Alaska will allow customers to hold a telephone reservation without payment for 24 hours and to cancel a reservation (not paid for) without penalty within 24 hours of making the reservation in order to give the customer an opportunity to check for lower fares. If you provide payment with a credit card at the time of booking and need to make a change in your reservations, we will be happy to waive our service fee for changing reservations within 24 hours of making the reservation as long as the fare class is available and you still meet any advance purchase requirements. If your ticket purchased is non-refundable, we can also provide a full refund without fee if requested within 24 hours of purchase.
Ravn Alaska always recommends reconfirming your reservations and flight times 24 hours before travel. You may do this by calling Reservations at 800-866-8394 or by going to the Manage Reservation tab on the homepage.
Ravn Alaska is proud to offer Web Check-In to save you time. Please note that Web Check-in is not offered for unaccompanied minors, passengers traveling with infants, and passengers holding paper tickets (including Ravn Commuter Coupons). If checking in online, you may do so as little as one hour and up to 24 hours before departure. Once you have printed your boarding pass, please bring your baggage to the counter one hour before departure. If you are not traveling with baggage, please be at the boarding gate 30 minutes prior to departure to ensure you have plenty of time for boarding the aircraft. If you have a carry-on item, please ensure you check in with an agent to receive a blue hand-carry tag for approved items to carry onboard. You will need a government-issued picture ID (not required for children under 18) as you board the aircraft.
If checking in at the airport, Ravn Alaska requires check-in at least one hour prior to scheduled flight departure time. You will need a government-issued picture ID (not required for children under 18). Make sure all luggage and hand-carried items have your name, address and telephone number clearly labeled on the outside as well as inside. Remove all old tags attached to your luggage from any prior trips. Don’t forget to declare any hand-carried items and receive a blue hand-carry tag for all approved items. The maximum weight limit for hand-carries is 20 pounds and the maximum size is 14 inches long by 10 inches wide by 18 inches deep. A personal item such as a purse or jacket is also welcome. Please also remember we are required by the TSA to collect Secure Flight Information which includes your first, middle and last name, date of birth and gender for every reservation, and by federal law, you must provide this before you can be checked in.
Ravn Alaska has a 30-minute final check-in cutoff. (Effective January 6th, 2014) This means that you must be checked in and holding your boarding pass no later than 30 minutes prior to your flight departure time and present for boarding at the gate. During this time, our staff is also finishing the final flight paperwork and the loading process. Failure to do so will cause the cancellation of your reserved seats and cancel the entire reservation. Reserved seats will also then be released to standby customers and additional cargo if weight and balance permits. To ensure for an on-time departure for all customers on your flight, the aircraft door will be closed 10 minutes prior to scheduled departure.
Failure to check-in for or cancel a confirmed reservation will result in automatic cancellation of your entire itinerary.
Ravn offers open seating on all flights and does not assign seats. We offer various beverages on our Dash 8 aircraft that are complimentary. For those customers 21 years of age or older, beer and wine are available on Dash 8 flights.
The following items may be carried on board the aircraft but are strictly prohibited for use on board aircraft and must be turned off at all times:
- AM, FM, VHF and CB radios
- Global positioning systems (GPS)
- Mobile phones (must be turned off when the aircraft door is closed)
- MP3 players and laptop computers may be used in flight once cruising altitude is reached.
Same Day Flight Change Program
With our Same Day Flight Change Program, you can get a confirmed seat for same-day flight changes for only $25. This program is subject to seat availability.
You may request a Same Day Confirmed Flight Change with a ticket agent at the Ravn Alaska station. You must be there to check in, one hour prior to the flight’s scheduled departure and up to 6 hours before the desired flight leaves. For example, if you are scheduled to leave on the 10 p.m. flight, and you would like to leave on the 2 p.m. flight, you may request your change as early as 8 a.m.
If you’ve already missed your flight and wish to use our Same Day Confirmed Flight Change for another flight on your original travel day, please see a customer service agent for assistance.
To qualify for the $25 Same Day Confirmed Flight Change Program:
- You must be holding confirmed reservations and tickets for flights operated by Ravn Alaska. This includes tickets booked with FlyAway Rewards points.
- You must keep the routing identical – meaning the same origin, destination and any possible connection cities.
- Your new desired flight must depart on the same calendar day as your originally scheduled flight.
If your ticket is booked with the following exemptions, you qualify for the Same Day Confirmed Flight Change program free of charge:
- FlyAway Rewards Gold Tier Members
- FlyAway Rewards Silver Tier Members
- Your ticket was purchased as a fully-refundable ticket
If you wish to make changes outside the above listed eligibility, normal change fees and restrictions apply. These changes must be made through a reservation agent by calling 1-800-866-8394.
Traveling with an infant or child
A child is considered an infant from birth to the day of their 2nd birthday. An infant can travel as a lap child free of charge. One infant is allowed per ticketed adult. When making reservations please advise the agent that you will be traveling with an infant and this will be noted in your reservation. If booking online, please select the infant option.
An adult traveling with a lap child may check the infant’s child restraint seat and/or stroller free of charge in addition to the regular baggage allowance.
A seat can be purchased and reserved for an infant at the same price of the accompanying adult’s fare. A maximum of two infant tickets may be purchased per traveling adult. Infants with their own seat must travel in an approved child restraint seat. Infants with their own tickets are subject to all standard fees and are entitled to the same baggage allowance as an adult traveler.
Ravn offers pre-boarding for adults traveling with infants.
Infant car seats:
Infants traveling with their own ticket must bring and use a child restraint car seat on board for seating. The seat must conform to all applicable federal motor vehicle safety conditions and the restraint certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft (should appear in red lettering on seat).
Infants that turn two years old during trip:
If your infant reaches two years of age during the course of your trip, a ticket must be purchased for all segments on which the child will be two years old.
How much baggage can I check in?
Each ticketed passenger is allowed one carry-on bag, (maximum size 14 inches long by 10 inches wide by 18 inches deep and maximum weight of 20 pounds) one personal item (coat or purse) and two checked bags, up to 50 pounds each, free of charge on Ravn Alaska operated flights. An excess baggage fee will be charged for each additional piece of checked baggage. Excess charges are as shown below when traveling only on Ravn Alaska-operated flights.
When making connections to another carrier, you will be subject to the fees of the most significant carrier’s rules. For example, if you are connecting from any Ravn Alaska flight to Alaska Airlines from Anchorage to Seattle or beyond, Alaska Airlines’ baggage rules and fees will apply as they are the largest portion of your journey.
Note: if you have oversize/or overweight baggage, both carriers’ charges will be collected.
- First 2 pieces: FREE
- 3-5 pieces: $60 each
- 6-8 pieces: $100 each
- 9 pieces and above: $150 each
Excess/overweight/oversize pieces travel on a space-available basis and are not guaranteed to travel with you on your same flight due to weight and space operational limitations. Baggage weighing 51 to 100 pounds will be charged a $50 fee per piece for the overweight charge. Any baggage between 62 and 81 linear (length + width + height) inches will be charged a $50 fee. Any baggage between 81 and 115 linear inches will be charged a $75 fee. Please note that oversize and/or overweight baggage connecting to another carrier will be charged per carrier. These items require special processing and handling at each airline and therefore require the additional charges per carrier.
Items weighing over 100 pounds will not be accepted at the ticket counter and must be sent via air cargo or other means.
What are the size and weight limitations of my baggage?
Passengers are limited to one small carry on item not to exceed 14 inches long by 10 inches wide by 18 inches deep and limited to 20 pounds on Era Aviation operated flights. You must also declare your hand-carry to a customer service agent and receive a blue approved hand-carry tag for each flight. Hageland Aviation operated flights may further restrict carry-on baggage due to weight and balance or size of aircraft. Refer to this checklist for other carriers’ carry-on size restrictions.
Note: accepted carry-on baggage sizes vary. Ravn Alaska may not be able accomodate carry-on baggage that other carriers can. Please be sure to stop by our ticket counter or utilize our baggage sizer to ensure your bag will be accomodated on board our aircraft.
The maximum size for each checked bag is 62 linear inches (length + width + height) and is limited to 50 pounds. Additional items and overweight items are subject to fees and will be carried as space allows. A $50 fee will be assessed for baggage weighing 51 to 100 pounds. A $50 fee will also be assessed for baggage over 62 linear inches. If the bag is overweight and oversize, a total of $100 will be assessed. Styrofoam containers will not be accepted for transport. If connecting to another carrier, the connecting carrier’s overweight and oversize fees will also apply in addition to Ravn’s fees.
All fragile and valuable items as well as any medications should be packed in your carry-on bag.
Do you offer connecting service to other airlines?
Ravn Alaska can check baggage through to your final destination on most carriers. If your travel includes one of our airline partners you may be subject to additional checked baggage restrictions or charges. Please check with the operating carrier for more information regarding their baggage policies.
Note: Baggage connections for Alaska Airlines require a minimum of 70 minutes between flights.
What items are restricted from being in my baggage?
Many common items used everyday in the household or workplace may seem harmless; however, when transported by air, they can be very dangerous. Variations in temperature and pressure in flight can cause items to leak, start a fire or generate toxic fumes. Items that may not be packed in your carry-on or checked luggage include:
- Cigarette lighters
- Explosives: fireworks, gunpowder, signal flares, sparklers or other explosives
- Flammable liquids: fuel, paints, lighter refills, strike anywhere matches, Sterno or solids
- Household items: drain cleaners, solvents, other caustic or corrosive solids or liquids
- Pressurized containers: butane fuel, scuba tanks, propane tanks, CO2 cartridges, self inflating rafts, spray cans (limited amounts of personal toilet articles such as hairspray are allowed)
- Undeclared firearms: firearms may not be placed in carry-on baggage. They may be included in checked baggage if they are declared, unloaded and properly packaged. Special restrictions apply for flights to/from Canada. For more information, please see the separately titled section on firearms or call Ravn Alaska at 800-866-8394.
- Cutting instruments: no cutting instruments of any kind regardless of size or composition are permitted in the cabin or beyond the security checkpoint. This includes knives of any kind, carpet knives, box cutters, scissors, razors, ice picks or other folding or retractable blades. Security may also confiscate other sharp objects such as manicure sets and cork screw type wine openers.
- Dry ice: dry ice may only be carried in checked baggage. The packaging must allow for the release of carbon dioxide gas. There is a limit of five pounds of dry ice per package. The package must be marked with the net weight of the dry ice or the statement that the net weight of the dry ice is five pounds or less. The name of the contents being cooled along with the words “Dry Ice” or “Carbon Dioxide, Solid” must be on the outside of the package. Dry ice in excess of five pounds must be forwarded via air cargo.
- Other materials: gasoline-powered tools, wet cell batteries, camping gear with fuel, hazardous radioactive materials, poisons, and infectious substances.
The above items are only a sampling of hazardous materials that may not be placed in your baggage or carried on board. All other items classified as “dangerous goods” by the U.S. government are also prohibited from being placed in your luggage. The shipment of unauthorized dangerous goods may result in criminal or civil penalties. For further information, please visit www.tsa.gov.
What kind of sporting equipment can I bring with me?
Sporting equipment such as snow skis and golf clubs may be checked as part of the free baggage allowance, and must be packed in a suitable container. A maximum of three fishing rods stored in a protective case may be checked. Cases CANNOT be taped together. Additional sporting equipment will be charged an excess fee. There is a fee charged in all situations for equipment such as surfboards, bicycles and scuba gear due to the size of these items. Please note that these articles are not covered in loss or damage claims, and personal insurance should be placed on any sporting good item prior to travel. Traveling with Firearms, Game Trophies, Fish or Game Meat
Firearm Acceptance, Packaging and Declaration.
Firearm packaging is required, and is as follows: all handguns, rifles, shotguns and competition firearms must be unloaded and packed in a hard-sided, locked gun case. The locks must be positioned where the firearm is not accessible by any means or able to be pulled out of the casing. Please note that only locks with keys or combination locks are allowed to secure your firearm.
What hunting equipment can I pack?
The following hunting equipment may be checked in as one of the free pieces in the normal baggage allowance.
- One rifle case with no more than two rifles including scopes, one shooting mat, noise suppressors and small tools
- One shotgun case with no more than two shotguns (within 162 linear inches and up to 50 pounds)
- One pistol case with a maximum of five pistols, noise suppressors, one pistol telescope and small pistol tools
Regulations allow for up to 50 pounds permitted if the ammunition is packed in the original manufacturer’s package or in a container designed for ammunition that is of sufficient strength to protect it from accidental crushing or discharge, for example wood, fiber plastic or metal. Ammunition must be no larger then 11/16 inches in diameter. Ravn Alaska will not transport fully automatic weapons.
Passengers must identify all firearms during check in. You must read and sign a special tag for each firearm container. This declaration states that the firearm is unloaded and that weapon(s) and ammunition are properly packaged. Failure to declare firearms will result in fines from the United States government and local authorities.
Fish or game meat:
Fish and raw meat will be accepted as part of the free baggage allowance. The fish or meat must be packaged in a leak proof container. Styrofoam containers are not permitted. Fish or game meat is not covered for loss or damage.
Ravn Alaska does not accept wet ice packaging. We recommend freezing or chilling meat or fish thoroughly before transporting for best results. These items are checked at your own risk for spoilage. Gel ice is recommended and up to 5 lbs of dry ice is acceptable. Dry ice must be declared at check in, and properly labeled on the package(s). Please read more about dry ice restrictions.
Antlers and game horns are accepted as cargo only, and these items require specific packaging for transport. All antler and horn tips must be protected to avoid damage to other baggage. Game trophies are not covered for loss or damage.
The Federal Lacey Act requires labeling on all seafood or game meat shipped across state lines. The State of Alaska requires special labeling for the following items leaving the state: unmounted antlers and horns, raw capes from big game, and bear hides. Completing and attaching a “big game trophy export” tag from the state of Alaska may meet this requirement, or it can be made by marking the outside of the container with the information.
What about fragile packages?
Please advise an Ravn Alaska customer service agent if your luggage contains fragile items so that the baggage can be labeled with a “fragile” sticker. Items packaged in cardboard boxes are covered in case of total loss but are checked at your own risk and are not covered in the event of damages or loss of contents.
Is my luggage insured?
Each ticketed passenger traveling on a U.S. domestic trip is covered to a maximum of $1250 for damage or loss to non-excluded items checked on an Era flight or to a maximum of $2500 if connecting to another carrier on the same ticket. For most international travel (including domestic portions of international journeys), liability for loss, delay or damage to baggage is limited to approximately $9.07 per pound for checked baggage and $400 per passenger for unchecked baggage. Excess valuation may be declared on certain types of valuable articles, but liability coverage extends to loss only. Era assumes no liability for fragile, perishable or valuable articles.
Ravn is also not responsible for damage, loss or theft of items taken onboard an aircraft by the passenger.
The following items are not covered for loss or damage in checked or unchecked baggage, and excess valuation cannot be purchased. These articles or similarly valuable items are carried at your risk and should be packed in a carry-on bag if possible. Medication should always be in your carry-on bag.
- Antiques, heirlooms
- Alcoholic beverages, wines, liquors
- Art objects, sculptures
- Binoculars, telescopes, optical devices, including eyeglasses
- Business contracts, documents
- Cash, currency
- Computers and related equipment
- Electronic equipment, including (but not limited to) computers, CD players, iPods, iPads, game systems, mobile phones, GPS, cameras, camcorders, audio, video or other photographic equipment, including photographs
- Food Items, including fish, moose and caribou meat for spoilage only
- Game trophies, including trophy parts, such as antlers, skulls and furs
- Historical artifacts
- Irreplaceable books, publications and collectibles, such as baseball cards
- Jewelry, watches
- Musical instruments
- Negotiable papers
- Original manuscripts
- Personal electronic devices, such as compact discs and video game cartridges
- Precious metals
- Sales samples
- Sports equipment, including bikes, skis, ski poles, snowboards, hockey sticks, fishing poles and tackle, tents and sleeping bags, or weaponry such as guns or bow-and-arrow archery equipment
In addition, we cannot accept responsibility for the following damage to shipping containers: scratches, nicks, dirt, lost pull straps, broken telescoping handles, missing or broken wheels, and damage or loss of items in over-packed bags.
What about perishable items?
Spoiled or damaged perishables are not covered for loss or damage, and excess valuation cannot be purchased.
What if my baggage is delayed or damaged?
Ravn Alaska will make every responsible effort to return your checked baggage within 24 hours when delayed. Ravn will also attempt to contact any customer whose unclaimed, checked luggage contains a name and address or telephone number. Due to flight availability and U.S. customs requirements, international bags may require more than 24 hours to return to the customer. In this case, an Ravn representative will provide the best available information as to the location and time of the return of baggage. In the event of delayed baggage delivery, Ravn Alaska does not offer reimbursement for interim expenses.
Ravn is not responsible for baggage not claimed after the baggage has been made available in the public baggage claim area. All lost, damaged, delayed or missing property must be reported directly to Ravn Alaska personnel as soon as possible and no later than four hours after arrival. Damages to wheels, handles, zippers, locks or telescoping handles and nicks, cuts or scratches are not covered and are considered normal wear and tear. Oversize or overweight baggage (over 50 pounds or 62 inches) is also not covered in damage claims.
If your claim is less than five days old, please communicate with the arrival airport where the claim was filed. If your claim is more than five days old, please contact the Ravn Baggage Claim Office at 800-866-8394, ext. 8326.
Special services including wheelchairs, children with disabilities, service animals and oxygen
Canes may be brought on board our flights. They may be stored within easy reach during flight. However, for takeoff and landing, canes must be stowed securely in the overhead bin. Walkers will be accepted as a gate-check item free of charge.
When making reservations with a Reservations agent or online, please indicate if you need or use a wheelchair. Please also advise if you need assistance between the ticket counter, gate and baggage area, if you require assistance boarding and deplaning, if you would like to pre-board, and any additional information you can provide to help us better assist your needs. A standard wheelchair is available at all Ravn Alaska ticket counters as well as an aisle chair for movement up and down aircraft stairs and to your seat. Please note that aisle chairs have weight limitations due to aircraft stair restrictions. When traveling with your own wheelchair or electric cart, it will be checked free of charge in addition to your regular baggage allowance.
Children with Disablities:
For children with disabilities, AmSafe has designed CARES (Child Aviation Restraint) specific for the unique challenges of traveling with a special-needs child, and the system is approved for use by the Federal Aviation Administration. The system offers added safety and upper body support for children, pre-teens, and teenagers alike. Aisle chairs (full assistance):
When making reservations with a Reservations agent or online, please indicate if you need full assistance (aisle chair service) onto the aircraft. Due to design and safety reasons, the Beechcraft 1900 aircraft cannot accommodate full assist requests. (aisle chair service)
If you are traveling with a specially trained service animal including search-and-rescue and law enforcement animals, it is important that you advise the Reservations agent of this when making your reservation. Service animals are allowed in the passenger cabin free of charge. The owner or handler must accompany the service animal at all times.
Era Aviation does not provide compressed medical oxygen onboard its flights. Passengers needing onboard medical oxygen must obtain a Portable Oxygen Concentrator (POC) for their own personal use while onboard the aircraft.
Passengers are allowed to use their own FAA-authorized POC or a rented POC onboard any company flight providing they are in conformance with all of the following rules. Passengers needing to obtain a POC should contact their health care provider or one of the companies listed below.
Note: FAA regulations prohibit the carriage of other types of personal oxygen bottles/devices, including those that contain compressed or liquid oxygen as they are classified as hazardous materials.
Passengers connecting between an Era Aviation flight and another airline, including code share partners, are responsible for arranging their POC use directly with the other airline.
Era Aviation allows onboard use of all FAA-authorized POCs, including those most popular models listed below by manufacturer name and specific model name. Other models of POCs are also permitted if proof of FAA-authorization is demonstrated.

Note: The AirSep Lifestyle device must have a placard affixed to the inside cover stating “RTCA/DO—1600 21 category M Compliant” to indicate that it has been modified for air travel. If the AirSep Lifestyle device does not have this placard, it will not be accepted for use onboard.

All POCs must be free of oil, grease or other petroleum products and in good condition, free from damage or other signs of excessive wear or abuse. Company personnel have the authority to reject carriage of any equipment that may compromise the overall safe operation of the flight.
Passengers are prohibited from using any non-FAA-authorized POCs onboard the aircraft. Non-FAA-authorized POCs, or any other POC that is rejected for onboard use, may be permitted as a carry-on item or checked baggage only under the following conditions:
- The unit must be empty and free of all stored pressure
- The battery must be removed and packaged separately if not in use
- The unit should have a recessed battery terminal and the packaged battery terminals should not contact any metal objects during carriage
Meet and assist:
Upon request, Ravn offers assistance to anyone needing an extra hand getting to and from the aircraft. There is no fee for this service. Please advise the Reservations agent and Check-in agent if you require assistance.
In addition to advising the Reservations Agent of your assistance needs, please be sure to advise the agent at check-in of your assistance needs so that they may best accommodate you. If booking online, you may indicate your special service request using the “Special Requests” dropdown.
CHILDREN TRAVELING ALONE (Unaccompanied Minors)
An unaccompanied minor is defined as one or more children age 5 through 17 traveling without an adult age 18 or over (exceptions are made for birth parents under the age of 18 traveling with their child). Children under 5 years may not travel without a parent or legal guardian. It is very important that all children traveling alone be checked in with us no later than 1 hour prior to departure for processing.
Ages 0 – 4 years old
Ravn Alaska will not accept children under the age of 5 for travel without an adult 18 years of age or older (exceptions are made for biological parents).
Ages 5 – 12 years old
Allowed on nonstop, direct and connecting flights. (Note: Children ages 5-7 years old can only make connections to other Ravn Alaska operated flights. Connections to Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air, or PenAir is not permitted) Service fee applies of $25.00 for non-stop (one flight segment) or $50.00 per connection, per child for any connecting flight, including a connection to Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air, or PenAir. Guardian information required at time of reservation and/or at check in.
Ages 13 – 17 years old
Accepted without restrictions. Service fee applies if unaccompanied minor service requested. Guardian information required if unaccompanied minor service requested. (Otherwise known as Teen Assistance)
When booking travel for an Unaccompanied Minor (UM) please be advised of the following:
You will be asked to provide the name, phone number and address for the responsible party dropping off and picking up the child. UMs may not travel on flights departing between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. or connect to flights departing between those hours.
A single fee of $25 for one-way (one flight number) per UM is charged for all Ravn Alaska flights. If the UM is connecting to another Ravn Alaska flight number or to Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air (AS) or PenAir (KS), the connection fee is $50. (Note: Children ages 5-7 years old can only make connections to other Ravn Alaska operated flights. Connections to Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air, or PenAir is not permitted) Children connecting to other airlines not listed above, is not permitted. Connections to Era Alaska, Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air, or PenAir must depart within two hours of arrival time of the Ravn Alaska flight. Aircraft type limits the number of UMs accepted on any given flight. UM service is offered on a first come, first serve basis only. All UM fees are in addition to the ticket price and must be paid upon arrival at the airport. UM fees are non-refundable. Unaccompanied minors cannot travel with pets, either carried onboard or checked as baggage, or with firearms.
At the airport with an Unaccompainied Minor:
All UM passengers must be checked in a minimum of 60 minutes prior to the scheduled departure of their flight. Photo ID will be required from the guardians designated for drop-off and pick-up. Regarding outbound travel, the responsible party must stay with the child until the flight has departed (is airborne).

Traveling with your pet
Era Alaska complies with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations for the humane transportation of animals.
If you are traveling with a pet, please notify the Reservations agent at the time of booking, or if booking online, please select the “pet in cargo hold” option under “Special Requests.” Pets are accepted on a first come, first served basis at the time of check in, so plan to arrive at the ticket counter early. A $75 service fee applies for transporting pets solely on Ravn flights. For connections to Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air or PenAir, a $100 fee applies for hand-carried pets and a $100 fee applies for checked pets. Pets checked in must be re-claimed at the baggage claim in Anchorage for connections to Alaska Airlines as TSA screening is required prior to transport. You will still only incur the one pet fee charge of $100. This charge also applies to any pets that are hand-carried into the cabin of the aircraft.
The following is a partial list of pets accepted for travel on Ravn Alaska, either checked or in a carry-on: cats, dogs, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, household birds, non-poisonous reptiles (snakes are not allowed in checked baggage, cargo, or hand-carry), pot-bellied pigs, rabbits and tropical fish.
Due to health risks, brachycephalic (short nose) dogs and cats will be accepted at the owner’s risk. The following are considered short nose dogs: American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire, Boston Terrier, Brussels Griffin, Bull Mastiff, Bull Terrier, Chow Chow, Dutch Pug, English Bulldog, English Toy Spaniel, French Bulldog, Japanese Boxer, Japanese Spaniel, Pekinese Pug, Shih Tsu, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and Terrier. Short nose cats include: Burmese, Exotic, Himalayan and Persian.
The following animals are NOT accepted as checked baggage and must travel as air cargo: any animal weighing over 149 pounds or that does not fit in a 500-size kennel, including but not limited to: horses, cows, spiders, large birds, chickens, wild animals, farm animals, pigs (pot bellies excluded) and amphibians.
If you are connecting to another airline, please note that you will have to allow time to pick up your pet at the connecting airport and re-check it with the connecting airline.
What kind of documentation do I need to travel with my pet?
The USDA requires warm-blooded animals traveling across state lines to have a current health certificate issued within 30 days by a veterinarian. This is your responsibility to obtain prior to travel, and certifies that the animal is in good health. Guide dogs are exempted from this rule.
If your pet is traveling to a cold weather destination, and is acclimated to temperatures below 45 degrees Fahrenheit, have the veterinarian state this on the health certificate in compliance with USDA regulations.
Note: Proof of rabies vaccination is required for animals traveling within the State of Alaska or when traveling across state lines. Proof of a parvovirus vaccination is required for travel to Nome or Kotzebue. Pets will not be accepted without proper documentation.
What kind of kennel should I use, and how should it be labeled?
Please keep the following guidelines in mind when selecting and labeling your pet’s kennel.
The USDA and IATA have specific requirements for pet kennels. The kennel must be structurally sound, (constructed of plastic, wood, metal) escape-proof (not accepted are clip-down kennels, collapsible, snap-top, soft-sided, or composed of wire, mesh, cardboard or wicker), properly ventilated, without offensive odors, and leak-proof with safe, non-toxic absorbent bedding. The kennel also must not have a plastic door, be secured with zip ties, snap or zip tie fasteners, duct tape, rubber bands, or secured with a lock. Most importantly, the kennel must be large enough for the animal to freely stand, sit, turn around and lie down in a normal posture. To avoid accidental injury, no part of the animal’s body may protrude through any openings in the kennel. (Note: Mesh or collapsable kennels are allowed for pets hand-carried.)
Your name, address, and phone number must be on the kennel, along with your signature certifying the animal has been offered food and water within four hours of scheduled flight departure. Feeding instructions must also be included. Two empty dishes, for food and water, must be secured inside the kennel and accessible from the outside.
All kennels must have “LIVE ANIMAL” labels with letters at least one inch high displayed on the top and side as well as arrows indicating “THIS END UP.”
Only one pet is allowed per kennel with the exception of two puppies or kittens, which are allowed together if they are eight weeks to six months old, weigh no more than 20 pounds each, and are fully weaned.

Notice for overbooking of flights:
Ravn Alaska flights may be overbooked. If the flight is overbooked, no one will be denied a seat until the airline personnel first asks for volunteers willing to give up their reservation in exchange for a payment of the airlines choosing. If there are not enough volunteers, Ravn Alaska will deny boarding to persons in accordance with a particular boarding priority. With few exceptions, persons denied boarding involuntarily are entitled to compensation. The complete rules for the payment of compensation boarding priorities are available at all ticket counters and boarding locations.
Notice of baggage liability limitations:
Liability for loss, delay or damage to baggage is limited unless a higher value is declared in advance and additional charges are paid. For most international travel (including domestic portions of international journeys) liability for loss, delay or damage to baggage is limited to approximately $9.07 per pound ($20 per kilogram) for checked baggage and $400 per passenger for unchecked baggage. For travel wholly within U.S. points, federal rules require any limit on an airline’s baggage liability to be at least $1250 per passenger for aircraft having less than 61 seats and $2500 per passenger for all other aircraft. Excess valuation may be declared on certain types of valuable articles. Carriers assume no liability for fragile, valuable or perishable articles. Further information may be obtained from the carrier.
Notice of incorporated terms:
Air transportation to be provided between points In the U.S. (including its overseas territories and possessions) is subject to the individual terms of the transporting air carriers, which are herein incorporated by reference and made part of the contract of carriage. Incorporated terms may include, but are not restricted to:
- Limits on liability for personal injury or death.
- Limits on liability for baggage, including fragile, valuable or perishable goods and availability of excess valuation coverage. NOTE: Era Alaska is not responsible for the following items in checked or unchecked baggage: cameras, camcorders, any form of electronic, video, audio or photographic equipment, jewelry, including watches, cash, currency, computers/related equipment, irreplaceable books, publications, securities, negotiable papers, business contracts or documents, antiques, heirlooms, keys, furs, medication, eye wear and similar high valued items. For a complete list of excluded items, please contact Ravn Alaska. In addition, we do not accept responsibility for the following: scratches, nicks, dirt, lost pulls straps, broken telescoping handles, missing and broken wheels, and damage to and/or missing contents from over packed bags.
- Claim restrictions, including time periods within which passengers must file a claim or bring an action against the air carrier.
- Rights of the air carrier to change terms of the contract.
- Rules about reconfirmation of reservations, check-in times and refusal to carry.
- Rights of the air carrier and limits on liability for delay or failure to perform service, including schedule changes, substitution of alternate air carriers or aircraft and rerouting.
- To the extent not in conflict with foregoing, carriage and other services performed by each carrier are subject to: (i) provisions contained in this notice, (ii) applicable tariffs, and (iii) carrier’s conditions of carriage and related regulations which are made part hereof (and are available upon application at the offices of carrier), except in transportation between a place in the United States or Canada and any place outside thereof to which tariffs in force in those countries apply.
- Checked baggage will be delivered to bearer of the baggage check. In case of damage to baggage moving in international transportation, complaint must be made in writing to carrier after discovery of damage and within 7 days from receipt. In case of delay, complaint must be made within 21 days from date the baggage was delivered. See tariffs or conditions of carriage regarding non-international transportation.
- This ticket is good for carriage for one year from date of issue, except as otherwise provided in this ticket, in carrier’s tariffs, conditions of carriage, or related regulations. The fare for carriage hereunder is subject to change prior to commencement of carriage. Carrier may refuse transportation if the applicable fare has not been paid.
- Carrier undertakes to use its best efforts to carry the passenger and baggage with reasonable dispatch. Times shown in timetable or elsewhere are not guaranteed and form no part of this contract. Carrier may without notice substitute alternate carriers or aircraft, and may alter or omit stopping places shown on the ticket in case of necessity. Schedules are subject to change without notice. Carrier assumes no responsibility for making connections.
- Passenger shall comply with government travel requirements, present exit, entry and other required documents and arrive at airport by time fixed by carrier or, if no time is fixed, early enough to complete departure procedures.
- No agent, servant or representative of carrier has authority to alter, modify or waive any provision of this contract.
Advice to international passengers on limitation of liability:
Passengers embarking upon a journey involving an ultimate destination or a stop in a country other than the country of departure are advised that the provisions of a treaty known as the Warsaw Convention may be applicable to their entire journey, including the portion entirely within the countries of departure and destination. The Convention governs and, in most cases, limits the liability of carriers to passengers for death or personal injury to approximately $10,000. Additional protection can usually be obtained by purchasing insurance from a private company. Such insurance is not affected by any limitation of the carrier’s liability under the Warsaw Convention. For further information please consult your airline or insurance company representative.
